40 Plus defeats "The Gods" in Church

The last Saturday in January presented several options for those looking to pitch some bags. However, the most competitive tournament of the bunch played out in St. Teresa's Church in Pawtucket, Rhode Island for the First Annual Knights of Columbus Cornhole Tournament. Our first big tournament of the year lived up to expectations with a densely competitive field. In group play, it was big names taking some big losses and failing to advance. Order was restored a bit in the competitive tournament with Rich Queen and Randy Parker of 40 Plus cruising through the winner's bracket. However, strong play from Andy Gomes and Charlie Prew (The Norton Gods) evened things up by taking the first match of the finals and were on the verge of completing the double-dip in the final match. Down to their last point, Randy Parker put up a strong frame to deliver 40 Plus to a 21-20 victory. Amen. The Dirty Dots, Mike Doherty and Rob Doherty, rounded out the top three. While teams from Massachusetts swept the podium, the Ocean State contingent racked up a HOLE lot of losses! Honorable mention is due to G2, Gus and Gus Bruker, who won the social division tournament.

While this tournament may be remembered for the dramatic ending, we should also recognize the arrival of some new faces who not only played, but were able to compete! It was great so see the guys from Abington, Jose and Joe represented a strong group from Sturbridge, and a star may be born in Larry Pigeon! 2015 is off to a great start and the next stop is The Wu with the Woburn Little League Cornhole Tournament on tap for February 21st at the Sons of Italy in Woburn. Be there!
